It was never intended for rock & roll to become extinct. The fundamental idea of the genre was to defy popular culture, and as soon as parents and kids began to enjoy it, fans began searching for the next big thing—an artist who would blow everyone away and create something that no one else could have imagined. While many rock historians point to punk as the turning point in U2 history, Bono was aware that progressive music was not the direction he wanted to take the band.
