 Age 28 is often about the time when a young man starts to hit his stride in his profession and starts to rise in his career. And indeed, whatever it is that Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch does next will likely follow that trajectory in the finest of ways.

But as he announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, is was very much about the end – and about a rather sad one

“I love the game of football so much, and my body won’t cooperate any longer,” Vander Esch said.
