Football careers are short and clubs’ fortunes are increasingly subject to wind-driven fluctuations, but for almost ten years, one of the highest profile positions in Australian sport was surprisingly stable.

Star defender Darcy Moore, who was essentially born into the position, was chosen by Collingwood to take over.

As the season nears its finish, Collingwood is leading the way thanks to a great 2023 campaign thus far, which has been largely attributed to the leadership and on-field play of Moore and Pendlebury.

While a change in the captaincy is often a spur for improvement, the Pies have taken this to the next level in 2023.

When Moore met with journalist Nat Edwards of AFL.com.au last year, the latter questioned him if he would ever want to captain Collingwood.

Indeed, Moore responded, “it’d be a real honor.” “This is a youthful group. Getting us back up the ladder and back into the top four or top eight requires a lot of work. Therefore, all hands are on deck and more is more in terms of leadership. So maybe in the future.

“Learning from Scott has also been incredible. He is still in the game; he is currently on game 914 or so.”

Moore had a lengthy but largely clear apprenticeship to become the captain. One of the rare few father-son captain duos, his father, Brownlow medallist Peter, was also a captain of the Pies.
