About half of the players on the Washington Commanders’ current roster will not be celebrating next Tuesday. Head coach Dan Quinn will be having a lot of difficult talks today.
On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders will reduce their roster of ninety-nine players to fifty-three. Choosing which players to keep and who to release will be Quinn and general manager Adam Peters’ most challenging chore since joining the team earlier this year. Of course, it also means that the regular season is quickly approaching.
Quinn is aware that there won’t be much good news for the players on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean a productive discussion can’t take place.
“What you do also want to do is give the player feedback,” added Quinn. “These are some of the things we would like to see going forward if you return here. Give the player some things, at the very least, if they decide not to return here. These are some things that, should they have another chance, I believe might really help you move forward.”
Quinn stated that there are still “quite a few” but “less than 10” open roster positions on the back end of the team. He enjoys the last week of training camp and the last preseason game in part because there are still players vying for those spots. Since most of the Commanders’ starters, including quarterback Jayden Daniels, are probably not going to play on Sunday, those players will have plenty of opportunities to establish themselves.
Quinn has attempted to provide his players with the greatest guidance available to ensure their success, but he prefers to let the competition unfold organically. He has informed them, first and foremost, that he does not want to see them perform nervously on Sunday since that will not result in their giving it their all.
