The Guyana Amazon Warriors were defeated by the Trinbago Knight Riders in a thrilling 2024 Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) match at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad, thanks to Deandra Dottin’s calm head and powerful hitting.
A loss would have been disastrous for Dottin’s team, but the Knight Riders managed to salvage some tournament hope with a thrilling Super Over triumph.
After each team scored 128 runs in their twenty overs, the game was tied and the box office was decided. Dottin led the Knight Riders in scoring at the top of the order with 53 from 38 balls before a stutter in the middle overs was then averted thanks to crucial contributions from Kycia Knight (16) and Shikha Pandey (25).
The Warriors appeared to be in control of the run pursuit. They needed a relatively modest 19 runs from the last three overs, thanks to Shemaine Campbelle providing support and Erin Burns playing a patient innings to get her second fifty in as many overs. In the last seconds of the game, Burns and Chloe Tryon both missed the crease, ruining the Warriors’ chances.
After making another strong showing in the game with statistics of 2/24, Shabnim Ismail onto the field for the Warriors in the Super Over. Then Dottin took the game by the scruff of the neck and hammered two massive sixes off the first three deliveries. On the second delivery, she sent the ball over the rope on the leg side high and long, sending her to her knees.
After a single, Jemimah Rodrigues entered the game for the last two deliveries. The small hitter displayed her poise by hitting a cover drive for four runs off the last ball that Ismail delivered. With just six deliveries, the Knight Riders amassed an incredible 19 runs.
The Warriors’ reaction did not turn out as expected. The thrifty one was Jess Jonassen.
