The Wrexham football club owes Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney approximately £9 million after the Hollywood players helped the Welsh team’s valuation soar by £7 million after purchasing it.

After being promoted to the English Football League (EFL), the Welsh team lost £5 million, but since then, their revenue has nearly doubled to £10.5 million.

For £2 million, the Hollywood celebrities acquired the League Two team in February 2021.

‘The amount owed to The RR McReynolds Company, LLC (owned by the two actors) at the year-end was £8.977million (2022: £3.714million),’ a statement from Wrexham said.

‘The financial losses suffered by the club since the takeover shouldn’t be repeated, with income generated by the club now sufficient to meet the operational costs of the club going forward.

Turnover increased from £5.972million to £10.478million in the year ending June 30 2023, but losses were up from £2.913million to £5.113million, the club reported.

When the season finishes in May, Wrexham hopes to go up to League One and are presently ranked third in the League Two standings.

The FX series Welcome To Wrexham has produced two series under McElhenney and Reynolds’ ownership, sparking interest in the club internationally. The third season will debut the following month.

They received the Dragon Award in 2022 from the Welsh Government, the Football Association of Wales, and S4C for their efforts to promote the nation and its language.

Reynolds and McElhenney’s arrival has raised the reputation of the Welsh club considerably, in part because to the popularity of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’
