The Guardians needed a fresh arm for Wednesday’s series finale against the Royals, so the team called on Sabrowski, who was a 2021 Minor League Rule 5 Draft pick. He’s pitched to a 3.51 ERA in 36 appearances between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus this year. To clear space, the Guardians had to designate Gose for assignment for a third time this season.
Aug. 27: LHP Logan Allen optioned to Triple-A Columbus; LHP Anthony Gose selected from Triple-A
After making his spot start on Monday to replace Alex Cobb in the rotation, Allen was sent back to Columbus on Tuesday to get another fresh arm in the bullpen in Gose. The Guardians exhausted all of their pitching options in Monday’s doubleheader against the Royals, so Gose provides some extra depth.
RHP Alex Cobb (nail fracture)
Expected return: Early to mid-September
Cobb could be nearing his return to the big league rotation, but the Guardians need to make sure he recovers well from his successful live batting practice session on Aug. 27 before making any determinations. It’s unclear whether the team thinks Cobb, who has missed two starts so far, will need a rehab assignment before rejoining the Guardians.
Cobb made two starts after coming over in a Trade Deadline deal with the Giants before landing on the IL with a nail fracture on his throwing hand. (Last updated: Aug. 27)
RHP Carlos Carrasco (hip strain)
Expected return: September
Carrasco is expected to throw a simulated game on Aug. 28. He sustained a hip strain in his start on Aug. 7 against the D-backs. In 21 starts this season, Carrasco is 3-10 with a 5.64 ERA. (Last updated: Aug. 27)
