Joel Matip’s surgery as well, according to Liverpool

Joel Matip’s anterior cruciate ligament injury has now been successfully treated surgically, according to Liverpool.

The Reds defeated Fulham 4-3 earlier this month, and after the game, Jurgen Klopp revealed that his center-back, 32, had suffered an ACL tear.

Matip will probably miss the rest of the 2023–2024 season due to the injury, which is a huge setback for the player and the team.

The defender is already well on his way to recovery, though, as Liverpool has posted an update on his successful surgery.

A statement on Liverpoolfc.com states, “A successful operation has now been completed and Matip will continue his rehabilitation program at the AXA Training Centre.”

“No timescale is currently being placed on his recovery.”

Matip is one of the Reds’ longest-serving first-team players, having made 14 appearances across all competitions this season. However, he is in the final year of his contract, and many believe this is his last game for Liverpool.

Despite his severe injury, Klopp recently hinted that there might still be a chance for the former Schalke star to receive an extension.

“I’m pretty sure the club will show their class, as you should do it,” Klopp told reporters prior to the Reds’ victory over Crystal Palace.

“I’m rather certain the team has already informed Joel that, in the event of an injury, everything will be alright.

“We now need to decide with Joel how it appears after that. That is a typical action, but he deserves all of our support, and he will receive it.

“I would say that there is a chance for a new deal, but ultimately it is not up to me to decide.” I am unable to sign these documents.”
