Texas QB Maalik Murphy accesses the transfer website ahead of the CFP

Maalik Murphy is checking into the transfer portal, thus the Texas Longhorns will be without their starting quarterback in their College Football Playoff semifinal matchup against the Washington Huskies.

Murphy announced his choice to ESPN on Wednesday.

Instead of an injured Quinn Ewers, the redshirt freshman made two starts for the third-ranked Longhorns (12-1) this season. Murphy would have supported Ewers in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on January 1st against the second-ranked Huskies (13-0), but Arch Manning will now take on that position.

Manning is a true freshman, and Ewers is a sophomore.

Murphy will immediately become eligible to play and will have three seasons to do so upon arriving at a new school.

Murphy expressed his distaste for the Longhorns to ESPN, saying, “I hate it, I hate it.” I have a lot of pride in this team. It’s difficult to give up after what we’ve accomplished thus far and our teamwork, particularly at this stage of the season.”

He claimed he had to go out of Texas soon away in order to visit colleges and choose the best transfer school.

Murphy told ESPN, “It’s nothing against Texas at all.” “This is all being done for me and my future. I will always consider myself a Longhorn and a member of this outstanding team.

“Because coach (Steve Sarkisian) has been so accepting and helpful along the way, I really appreciate him.” He’s been a great assistance as a player here. It will undoubtedly take me a while. I’m happy that he could mentor me.”

After winning his first games on October 28 against BYU and November 4 against then-No. 23 Kansas State, Murphy went on to complete 40 of 71 passes (56.3 percent) for 477 yards this season. Three touchdown passes were made by him, but he also had three interceptions.

Prior to coming to Texas, Murphy was a standout prospect out of Gardena, California’s Junipero Serra High School.
