Ohio photographer survives heart attack after Michigan-Ohio State game, claiming Michigan saved his life.

Tens of thousands of fans gathered at Michigan Stadium for a game against Ohio State. Freelance photographer Aaron Josefczyk, from Cleveland, escaped the crowd by filing photos. Thirty minutes later, he walked down the tunnel to retrieve a lens. While taking a photo, he experienced chest pain and alerted two police officers, causing him to be short of breath and hot.

A 54-year-old Ohio man, who grew up in a Buckeye household and graduated from Ohio State with a photography degree, was diagnosed with a heart attack by paramedics. Three weeks later, he is recovering at his home in Ohio, thanks to the care of stadium medical staff and Michigan Medicine. Josefczyk, who grew up in a Buckeye household, is living his dream of getting paid to cover sports, from every Ohio State football home game to Cleveland’s professional teams. He initially didn’t believe the news, but he now believes that Michigan saved his life.

Michigan Stadium’s medical director, Dr. Mark Lowell, confirmed that physical fitness is not a good indicator of coronary disease risk. He explained that factors like cholesterol levels, family history, and genetic predisposition can contribute to coronary disease. Josefczyk was taken to the stadium’s medical station, which conducted an EKG and coordinated transportation to the University of Michigan Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center. Lowell’s team alerted the hospital that Josefczyk needed catheterization to open blood flow to the heart, as timely transportation limits muscle degradation in the heart. Ambulance drivers had to navigate gameday congestion to ensure timely care.
