Martin Jones, a veteran goaltender, provided solid support in the Maple Leafs’ victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Martin Jones, a veteran in the National Hockey League, has helped the Leafs overcome challenges posed by injuries and struggles of Ilya Samsonov.

Kyle Dubas was disappointed when NHL player Ryan Jones turned aside 38 shots in a 7-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Scotiabank Arena. The Leafs, who executed on offense without Auston Matthews, didn’t necessarily need Jones to be solid, but he was. Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said the score was a good night for the team, but there were still many opportunities at the net.

The goaltender, Ryan Jones, demonstrated his professionalism and experience by delivering his 29th career shutout, his first since January 12 when he was with the Seattle Kraken. Jones’ calm and relaxed demeanor in the game made everyone feel better about themselves and the game. His poise and professionalism were praised, and his 29th career shutout was his first since October. Jones’ positive approach to the Toronto Marlies job, likely knowing he would be required by the Leafs, demonstrates his resilience and commitment to the team.

Matthew Knies’ Gordie Howe hat trick and Max Domi’s first three-point game with the Leafs were key highlights in the game. Mitch Marner’s pass helped create the fourth Leafs goal, while Knies set up Domi with patience and a good save from goalie Tristan Jarry. The Leafs also managed to get included on best-of-the-month highlight reels, with Knies blown past defenceman Ryan Graves and going high backhand to score.

Knies didn’t perform like someone who missed the previous two games with illness, but his performance showed potential once he gets fully comfortable in the NHL. Dubas, the team’s GM, had a job ahead of him in rebuilding the Penguins, but it wasn’t the playoff success he envisioned. Acquiring defenceman Erik Karlsson didn’t make sense at the time and certainly doesn’t now, as there is not enough on the Penguins roster for him to help get to the playoffs.

John Tavares engaged Sidney Crosby in the first period, which was a rare bit of nastiness from Tavares. Wendel Clark had one Gordie Howe hat trick during his rookie year in 1985-86, and Tavares finished with nine shots on goal, a new personal high for 2023-24. His previous best was seven, and he beat that in the first two periods when he had eight.

Matthews’ absence due to illness was a late development, as he arrived intending to play but his body was not cooperating. He had to go home and make adjustments. The game served as a reminder of the job that Dubas has ahead of him in rebuilding the Penguins.
