JUST IN: Super League coach joins surprise new club ahead of 2024 campaign.

Simon Woolford, the former manager of the Huddersfield Giants, has assumed an unexpected new role.

Before Ian Watson took over the Giants at the end of the 2020 season and made significant changes, Woolford was in command of the team.

Woolford was the driving force behind the team’s historic victory over Super League Champions St Helens in 2020. He also oversaw the acquisition of Aidan Sezer, the 2020 Man of Steel contender, who forged a fantastic alliance with Lee Gaskell before Watson broke it up in the years that followed.

The Giants had a fantastic start to the 2020 season, but they were arguably the ones most negatively impacted by the epidemic. With 13 minutes remaining in the first game after the lockdown, the Giants led the Leeds Rhinos 26-6 and appeared to be leading the league but ultimately lost 27-26.

The Giants never recovered after that, and Woolford finally left the team.

The Daily Telegraph stated that Woolford, who had a great second stint at Queanbeyan Blues in 2023, has now departed to play in the Macarthur Rugby League in 2024.

Following his successful conclusion of his second coaching stint with the Queanbeyan Blues, Simon Woolford has signed a contract to play for Picton in the Macarthur Rugby League in 2024.

“After a stellar 262-game NRL career with the Raiders and Dragons, the former hooker hung up his boots in 2008 and turned to the clipboard. His three-year tenure at Huddersfield in the English Super League was the culmination of this.

“Despite missing the finals the previous season, the Macarthur competition’s most successful club, the Magpies, are predicted to field a strong roster this year.”

Regarding his previous team, the Huddersfield Giants, they are about to begin their fourth season under Ian Watson’s leadership, which has been erratic at times.

The former Salford Red Devils manager brought in a plethora of big-name players for 2021, but the team struggled to find a winning formula and finished outside the top six. However, in 2022, the Giants would rank among the top teams, placing third, and they truly ought to have won the Challenge Cup Final.

Even if the Giants signed even more high-profile players in 2023, they would still struggle and were even rumored to be interested in Justin Holbrook.
