JUST IN: Ex-Cowboys Running Back Cut, Could Sign With. Playoff Team

As of right now, the former running back for the Dallas Cowboys is a free agent.

Corey Clement

Corey Clement, who played for the Cowboys in 2021, was cut off the Arizona Cardinals practice squad on Monda y,January 8, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The veteran back is now free to join with a playoff team as a result of the trade.

Pelissero wrote on January 8 on X, “The Cardinals are releasing veteran RB Corey Clement from the practice squad today, per source, giving him a chance to join a playoff team that needs depth.”

This season, Clement made three appearances for the Cardinals, spending every minute of those appearances on special teams. Due to James Conner’s injury, Clement started the Arizona Cardinals’ Week 18 season finale against the San Francisco 49ers, seeing some offensive play during the 2022 campaign. Clement had three receptions for 25 yards and eight carries for 23 yards and a touchdown.

After signing and being released by the New York Giants before the season began, the 29-year-old back played in all 17 of the Cowboys’ 2021 games. He was primarily a special teams player, participating in just 6% of the regular season but appearing in 61% of the special teams snaps.

Clement recorded four tackles, 33 carries for 140 yards, and six receptions for 29 receiving yards and one touchdown in his one and only season in Dallas.

Despite moving about a bit in recent years, Clement’s four-year stay with the Philadelphia Eagles is what made him famous as an undrafted free agent. Clement led the squad in receiving with four receptions for 100 receiving yards and a touchdown, which helped the team defeat the New England Patriots in the 2018 Super Bowl.

However, his most notable moment was during the Eagles’ famous “Philly Special” play, which saw Clement hand off to Trey Burton before he threw a touchdown pass to Nick Foles on fourth-and-goal to give the Eagles a 22-12 lead heading into halftime.

During an interview with Rich Eisen shortly after the game, Clement commented on the popular play.

“I was hoping [Jason] Kelce didn’t high snap it and it turns into some crazy stuff,” said Clement back in February 2018. “Initially, I looked up to make sure it wasn’t a high snap and I got down after that,” Clement told Eisen. “I flipped it to Trey Burton and I don’t think I watched the rest of the play. I was just so confident and waiting for the crowd noise. I turned around and Nick had the ball, so it was pretty cool.”

Would the Cowboys Try to Get Corey Clement Back Together?
Regarding a possible reunion with the Cowboys, it is most likely not going to happen. As he did in Dallas, Clement has primarily served as a special teams player in recent years, and the Cowboys are unlikely to use a roster space on a utility type player.

Rico Dowdle made a comeback to the field to participate in the season finale against the Washington Commanders following an ankle injury that kept him out of the Detroit Lions game in Week 17. Before Dalvin Cook inked a contract with the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas did express some interest in him. Cook, a four-time Pro Bowl running back, had the potential to be Tony Pollard’s primary backup.

Dallas will probably stick with the running backs they already have unless Pollard or one of their backups gets hurt.
