BREAKING NEWS: Seahawks Eyeing Chiefs Coach For Defensive Coordinator As……..

As he continues to assemble his first staff as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, Mike Macdonald could be joined in the Pacific Northwest by another well-known individual. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the Seahawks have shown interest in hiring Joe Cullen, the defensive line coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, as their next defensive coordinator. This comes two days after the team hired veteran NFL defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier as associate head coach. The Michigan Wolverines and the Washington Commanders are reportedly also in the running for his services in the same capacity.

With seventeen seasons of NFL assistant coaching experience under his belt, Cullen has been with six different teams during his tenure, which includes two distinct stays with the Jaguars. He had previously worked as a defensive line coach for the Ravens under head coach Jon Harbaugh from 2016 to 2020, when he was on the same staff as Macdonald. In three of those seasons, the club finished in the top five in scoring defense.

Calais Campbell, who made his sixth Pro Bowl in their one and only season together, Matt Judon, Brandon Williams, and Terrell Suggs were among the players that flourished while playing for Cullen in Baltimore. The Ravens allowed less than 19 points per game in four of those seasons.

Even in the tumultuous 2021 season, Cullen oversaw significant progress in Jacksonville under coach Urban Meyer, despite an unsustainable circumstance. The Jaguars improved over the previous season in terms of yards, points per game, yards per run, and passing yards per game under his leadership. They also raised their number of sacks from 18 to 32, almost doubling their production from 2020.

Cullen would be a great addition to Macdonald’s staff because they had worked together as coaches for five seasons in Baltimore. His experience in defensive line would also be helpful because Macdonald had previously coached linebackers and the secondary, while Frazier was more well-known for his work with defensive backs. His arrival would be a huge help for a front line that has occasionally faltered in recent seasons, especially against the run. He brings 16 years of expertise as a defensive line coach to the table.

Cullen probably won’t be calling plays like he did with the Jaguars three years ago if he is appointed as the Seahawks’ new defensive coordinator. As the “best way we can win” right now, Macdonald said he intended to call plays during his inaugural press conference on Thursday.
