One fifth-year option that is expected to be declined is that of Jones following a disastrous 2023 campaign. MassLive’s Mark Daniels reported last month that the Patriots “don’t plan on” picking up his option, which will be worth $34.4 million.

“The quarterback has a clean slate with (Jerod) Mayo and could remain on the roster, but the team won’t hesitate to move him if the right deal comes across their desk,” Daniels wrote.

Jones was one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL last season and contributed to the Patriots finishing with a 4-13 record—which was their worst finish since the early 2000s—before being benched in favor of Bailey Zappe.

New England owns the No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft and could select a quarterback to replace Jones. The franchise could also look at options in free agency, such as Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield.
