What a smart move: He has finally done what was expected of him

In 2024, the Oklahoma Sooners will field a defense that is among the most seasoned in NCAA football. The interior defensive line is the one position on the roster with the fewest snaps.

Da’Jon Terry, who saw action at defensive tackle for 306 snaps in the last campaign, is back. Davon Sears didn’t play much for the Sooners in 2023 despite playing a lot for Texas State before moving to Norman. Neither did 2023 signees Ashton Sanders or Markus Strong, nor did former four-star Gracen Halton.

There are a few gifted players with promise but lack much experience.

That’s why Jacob Lacey’s decision to withdraw from the game citing a health concern was so significant. Last season, Lacey topped the defensive lineman position in snaps played, and in 2024, he was predicted to start. The roster lacks depth in experience, therefore the younger players will receive plenty of chances to perform on the field.

David Stone has the chance to step in and fill that role. Stone discussed what he needs to do to get on the field during the round of interviews that the rookies conducted last week.
No other Sooners defensive tackle, including Terry, played more than 100 snaps in the previous campaign.

A few talented players who need experience show promise.

That’s why it was so important that Jacob Lacey decided to pull out of the game, citing health issues. Lacey led the defensive tackle position in snaps played during the previous season, and it was anticipated that he would start in 2024. The younger players will have lots of opportunities to show off their skills on the field because there isn’t a depth of experience on the roster.

There’s an opportunity for David Stone to take over and play that part. During the round of interviews last week, Stone talked about what he needed to do to get on the field.

David Stone has been up to the challenge at every turn. Given his aptitude and approach, there’s no reason to think he can’t make an early impression as a player.
