April 19, UPI Kenny Payne, an assistant coach at Kentucky and a former head coach of Louisville men’s basketball, will become a member of John Calipari’s Arkansas staff, the Razorbacks announced.

Payne will function as associate head coach, according to the Razorbacks. Payne led the Cardinals to a 12-52 record over two seasons, but Louisville fired him in March. In 2023–24, the Cardinals finished 8–24.

Payne, 57, worked with the New York Knicks as an assistant from 2020 to 2022. He worked for Kentucky from 2010 till 2020. Payne worked at Oregon as an assistant as well, from 2004 to 2009.

From 1985 to 1989, he was a standout player at Louisville. In the 1989 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected him in the first round. Payne played for the 76ers for four seasons.

Before beginning his coaching career, he played in the NBA D-League and in Australia, Italy, Japan, Brazil, the Philippines, China, Argentina, and Cypress.

Payne was a member of Calipari’s Kentucky staff for the Wildcats’ four Final Four appearances, which included a return trip to the championship game in 2014, and their 2012 NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship.
On the men’s basketball coaching staff page of the Razorbacks website, the only other person mentioned is Ronnie Brewer Jr., an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator who was hired in 2021.
