Update: The Lions Are Signing QB To A Four-Year, $212 Million Contract Extension, Till The 2028 Season

As reported on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared via a source that the Detroit Lions have finalized a four-year contract extension worth $212 million with quarterback Jared Goff.

The $212 million contract extension also includes $170 million guaranteed and will tie him to the team through the 2028 season. The Lions had acquired Goff and three draft picks from the Rams in a 2021 trade.

The contract extension deal for the 2016 No. 1 pick will make him the highest-paid player in franchise history. After the new deal, the $53 million average annual salary will make Goff the second-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, behind only the Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow ($55 million).

Goff, 29, had success in three seasons with the Lions since he was acquired in a trade that sent quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. He helped the Lions earn two playoff victories in one postseason for the first time since winning the 1957 NFL title.

He led the Lions to a 9-8 record in 2022 and 12 wins and a playoff appearance last season, the Lions won their first two postseason games since 1991 and reached the NFC championship game.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes shared, in a radio interview last week, that Goff had “earned an extension” and was “a high priority” for the team after signing Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell to long-term extensions earlier this spring.

GM Holmes said earlier,

“When he came to us, I always had belief. So, him doing what he did this past year or even the year before, it’s not a surprise to us. I just know how he’s wired. I know the talent he has, I know the leadership he has, I know his mental and physical toughness, I know what he’s made about, and I think his peers, and definitely his teammates recognize the same things. So, just happy that what he’s done and just couldn’t be more proud of everything he’s achieved.”
