Once, Tom Petty disproved an urban legend by revealing the real inspiration behind “American Girl.”

In terms of American music, Tom Petty was nothing short of a colossus. The guitarist and songwriter turned his passion for the Beatles so ng”Here Comes the Sun,” written by George Harrison, into a lucrative career. “American Girl,” the hit song that made Petty and The Heartbreakers famous, is one of his numerous successful tunes. According to an urban legend, Petty revealed the song’s true meaning years before he passed away, dispelling the idea that it is about a college student who committed suicide.

Apart from the catchy “American Girl,” Petty’s songs were frequently featured on MTV, radio, and charts. The native of Florida drew inspiration for his songs from everything around him.

Petty adapted it into the huge smash song “Don’t Come Around Here No More” after frequent collaborator Stevie Nicks told him what she said after a regrettable one-night stand. Petty wrote “Free Fallin'” in 30 minutes during a lull in the Traveling Wilburys’ recording sessions, purely for Jeff Lynne’s amusement.
