CBS Philadelphia, PA The much-publicized heat wave is about to begin and is expected to linger through this week and possibly into next weekend.

Temperatures rise sharply as a ridge of high pressure rises over the eastern United States, and they continue to rise into the weekend.

In the Philadelphia region, the typical high temperature as we get into the second part of June is in the mid-80s. In the summer, a heat wave is typically defined as a forecasted temperature of more than 90 degrees for more than two days in a row.

Monday afternoon highs will reach 90 degrees, which is the highest temperature recorded at Philadelphia International Airport three times already this year, including last Friday. Heat indices will be close to 100 degrees on Tuesday afternoon as temperatures rise into the mid-90s under the strengthening dome of high pressure.

Because of this, a heat advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for the majority of the region, effective from 6 a.m. on Tuesday until 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

It is anticipated that the heat and humidity will not only continue until the middle of the week, but may even get worse. The region will see highs in the mid-90s by Wednesday, and the heat index may rise to 105 degrees. After that, temperatures may rise much higher on Friday and Saturday.
